AI Visualization Must Respect Historic and Sacred Contexts
Artificial-intelligence visualization for historic and sacred places requires community authority, documentary evidence, provenance, cultural protocols, uncertainty, access boundaries, disclosure, and accountable human stewardship.
AI cannot earn the authority to reconstruct a historic or sacred place merely by producing a plausible image; representation must remain governed by evidence, community, and cultural responsibility.

The reconstruction filled what the record left open
A generated scene restored a damaged interior, placed people in ceremonial positions, and completed symbols missing from the surviving record. It looked coherent. The community connected to the place had not been asked whether the scene should exist.
The model had converted documentary silence into visual certainty.
Authority came before generation
UNESCO AI ethics and intangible-heritage principles, the UN declaration on Indigenous rights, and the ICOMOS interpretation charter address different responsibilities. Together they make participation, dignity, cultural context, evidence, and stewardship central to representation.
A technically possible reconstruction could still be historically weak, culturally restricted, or ethically unacceptable.
Uncertainty remained part of the place
Sources, prompts, model use, alterations, rights, community protocols, and approval needed durable provenance. Labels identified hypothesis rather than completed fact. Access boundaries protected sacred knowledge and vulnerable locations.
Some absences were not gaps for AI to solve. They carried loss, restriction, contest, or living authority.
Evaluation continued after publication. If visitors consistently mistook a hypothesis for history, treated a sacred practice as spectacle, or used the representation in ways that endangered the place, stewards needed authority to revise access or remove the image.
The image remained under stewardship
