One arrival question became a test

Put the mouse aside. Mute the audio, enlarge the text, stop the motion, and try to answer one ordinary arrival question. Which entrance should a first-time visitor use?

The experience could change before the property did. A missing label, trapped focus, unexplained image, low contrast, or captionless instruction could block preparation for routes, seating, restrooms, assistance, sensory conditions, or participation.

Online barriers could deny real access

The U.S. Department of Justice's March 2022 guidance explained that inaccessible web content could deny people equal access to information under applicable ADA responsibilities for state and local governments and businesses open to the public.

The guidance was not individualized legal advice, and obligations depended on the organization and circumstances. Its practical point was plain: a digital barrier could exclude someone well before a helpful employee or physical entrance became reachable.

Four principles needed human testing

WCAG 2.1 organized accessibility around content being perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. Its criteria addressed alternatives, captions, structure, contrast, keyboard use, focus, reflow, input, motion, status messages, and compatibility.

A clean automated report could still miss an illogical route, vague alternative text, exhausting interaction, or essential detail hidden in movement. Automated checks found some failures. Disabled people, assistive-technology users, accessibility professionals, and careful manual review found the experience.

Different properties created different preparation needs

A historic house might have constrained routes. An attraction could add queues, darkness, sound, timed entry, or motion. A worship property might host ceremonies, classrooms, food programs, and unfamiliar traditions in the same week.

Important images received useful alternatives; spoken material received captions and transcripts; spatial and visual information received relevant description. Color, sound, position, and animation never carried the only clue. Equivalent paths communicated the decision without requiring the same sensory experience.

The entrance answer stayed connected to people

The entrance question also needed a private, respectful way to reach responsible personnel, accessible forms, understandable response expectations, and an offline alternative. Technology could prepare the exchange. It could not decide what an individual required. The answer became accessible when information and accountable people remained available together.
