Digital Orientation Can Reduce First-Day Friction
The first-day schedule named three buildings, a dining period, and an advising appointment; the student still had to learn the route while carrying everything else the day meant.
Digital orientation succeeds when spatial rehearsal removes avoidable uncertainty and returns attention to people, learning, and participation.

The schedule had destinations, not a day
The first-day schedule named three buildings, a dining period, and an advising appointment. It did not show the crossings, entrance, elevator, or place to recover after a wrong turn.
Students were also carrying housing, technology, policies, unfamiliar language, emotion, and the social work of beginning. Avoidable geography competed with everything that deserved their attention more.
Digital and physical needs were already entangled
EDUCAUSE's 2022 national survey of 820 U.S. undergraduates described persistent technology challenges and the continued importance of physical campus space. Respondents also valued online resources across different modality preferences.
The sample could not represent every student or institution. It supported orientation that connected digital flexibility with campus participation and human help rather than forcing an online-versus-physical choice.
Orientation followed a student task
Transportation, housing, classrooms, dining, libraries, advising, health, recreation, and employment gained meaning through schedules, eligibility, documents, costs, contacts, and next steps.
Paths should follow the student's purpose, not the institution's departmental chart. Rehearsing from residence toward class could reveal distance, landmarks, crossings, weather, crowds, lighting, and elevators. Official alerts and onsite guidance retained authority when construction or events changed the route.
Preparation needed privacy and access
Digital orientation required keyboard operation, captions, transcripts, descriptions, readable type, zoom, and alternatives. It could not determine accommodation or complete usability; disabled students and qualified professionals needed to test both digital and physical paths.
Students might explore disability, health, finance, identity, safety, housing, or academic support. Institutions should not infer personal need from browsing. Aggregate friction could improve guidance without turning exploration into an unsupported profile.
The first day had attention left for people
SiteSee could connect approved orientation with current places and tasks while advisers, peers, and support teams remained central to belonging.
The schedule still required movement through three buildings. The student no longer had to learn every route under pressure. More of the first day could belong to the adviser, classmates, questions, and purpose that no map was meant to replace.
